Tourism ministry to supportAustralian academy's yacht

(MENAFN – Muscat Daily) One of the best sailing academies in the world – the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) Youth Sailing Academy – will now have an Omani connection.

The sultanate’s Ministry of Tourism (MoT) signed a sponsorship agreement with the Sydney-based academy on Thursday.

Oman’s tourism ministry will sponsor one of the ten Elliott 7m fixed keel yachts at the leading academy. The agreement is expected to strengthen maritime links between Australia and Oman and acknowledge the rich maritime history of the Gulf nation.

Mona Tannous Country Manager for Oman Tourism in Australia and New Zealand said ‘It was an easy decision for Oman to go ahead with this sponsorship considering the strong synergy between Oman Sail and the CYCA in their
objective to introduce the sport of sailing to youngsters and instill a sense of team spirit among young Omanis and Australians. This collaboration will strengthen links between Oman with Australia.’

Salim al Mamari Director-General of Tourism Promotions at Oman’s tourism ministry said ‘We take great pleasure in having the opportunity to become involved with the highly esteemed CYCA Youth Sailing Academy through our sponsorship of an Elliott 7. This initiative will provide us the opportunity to develop strong links among Oman Sail the CYCA and the Australian sailing community.’

Also present at the signing ceremony was David Graham CEO of Oman Sail.

CYCA commodore John Cameron thanked Oman’s tourism ministry and Oman Sail. ‘Sponsors are integral in ensuring that the many programmes and regattas the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy conducts are delivered to the highest possible standard and assist in maintaining one of the newest fleets of match racing boats in Australia.’

Cameron added ‘The academy celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and continues to be one of the leading youth sailing academies in Australia.”

Although the CYCA is best known for conducting the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race its Youth Sailing Academy is well regarded nationally as well as internationally.

The objective of the academy is to promote youngsters in offshore keel boat racing by providing ways for young sailors aged between 12-24 years to develop the skills necessary to achieve that goal.
