Thumb down: St. Lucie Sailing Club terminating lease with Martin County

ROUGH SEAS: It was an excellent idea that didn’t work out.

Martin County and the St. Lucie Sailing Club entered into a five-year agreement in March 2009, that allowed club members to store their boats on a portion of Pendarvis Cove Park in Palm City. The county collected $8,400 each year in income, which helped offset the $13,000 annual expense to operate the 42-acre park.

Recently, sailing club officials informed the county they are terminating the lease because of declining membership.

“We’ve notified our members they need to pull their boats out,” said Asta Poirier, commodore of the sailing and social club. “We are in the process of withdrawing from the agreement with Martin County.”

County officials, who say they don’t anticipate offering the lease to someone else, likely will decide the park’s future during budget reviews later this year.
