Sailing takes place at Gulfport, Pass Christian this weekend

Gulfport Yacht Club and Pass Christian Yacht Club will conduct regattas this weekend as the sailing season heats up as July comes to a close.

Gulfport will hold its annual Weatherly Regatta, which includes Capdevielle racing for the Gulf Yachting Association.

At the same time, Pass Christian will hold its annual Birthday Regatta, the second of four straight regattas at PCYC. It will also be conducting the GYA Lightning Class championship.

The Capdevielle competition at GYC consists of five races in Flying Scots. Three races will be held today, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday’s competition starts at noon.

Gulfport sailing director Sam Vasquez said 10 to 15 clubs in the GYA will be competing in the Capdevielle races.

There will also be big boat or PHRF competition, with one race Saturday and one race Sunday. Today’s race starts at 12:30 p.m. with Sunday’s race at 11:30 a.m. The boats will race at Gulfport Yacht Club on Saturday and race to PCYC on Sunday.

There will be also be an Open Scots class, which will not be Capdevielle competition.

PCYC will conduct competition in several one-design classes for the Birthday Regatta, including Lightning, J-22, Rhodes 19 and Finns. Racing begins at 12:30 p.m. today and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Five races total are scheduled.

Competitors in the GYA Lightning Championship are competing for the Commodore Eugene Taylor Perpetual Trophy.

There also will be PHRF competition, with one race at noon today and one race at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Pass Christian hosted the Junior Lipton competition at week ago. Pass will host the Leukemia Cup on Aug. 3-4, then the all-women’s Knost Regatta on Aug. 10-11.

The annual Lipton Regatta will take place at Bay-Waveland Yacht Club on Labor Day weekend.
