Learn to Sail – Leadership Skills – Colgate Offshore Sailing School

The week is packed with training sessions on how to sail with emphasis on safety, team building and leadership skills.

Fort Myers, FL (PRWEB) June 07, 2013

As school drew to a close last Thursday, 15 achievers at the Cypress Lake Middle School went home with an assignment: to study the Offshore Sailing School Fast Track to Sailing textbook in anticipation of a special week of sail-training and team building with Offshore Sailing School in July.

“Our gift of a Learn to Sail course for the school’s 8th annual silent auction was apparently a ‘hot item’”, explains Doris Colgate, CEO and President of Offshore Sailing School. According to eighth grade teacher Heather Millican, they had just finished a school wide read of The Great Wide Sea, a story about a family who embarks on a yearlong sailing adventure through the Bahamas. “That sparked my desire to get the kids out on the water to truly experience what sailing is all about,” continues Colgate.

A meeting with Jeannane Folaros, Cypress Lake Middle School principal, and Heather Millican solidified Colgate’s offer to give the school a sail-training and team building adventure for 15 students at no cost to the school or parents.

Called the Offshore Sailing School/Cypress Lake Middle School Sail-Race Challenge, this five day training program will be held July 15-19 from 8:30 to 11:30 each day. The 15 Cypress Lake Middle School Sailing Team participants will sail on three of Offshore’s award-winning Colgate 26 sailboats from the new Pink Shell Beach Resort Marina on Ft. Myers Beach. Five members of the sailing team will be assigned to each boat and an Offshore Sailing School instructor.

“The week is packed with training sessions on how to sail with emphasis on safety, team building and leadership skills, explains Colgate. On Friday, the three-boat student teams will compete against each other in a regatta, which culminates with an awards ceremony where team members receive medals donated by Roberts Advertising of Ft. Myers, Offshore Sailing School certificates and a special Offshore Sailing School Logbook.

Millican and another teacher, Dana Thomas, worked on student requirements and announced the teams on May 15, saying: “The kids, parents, families are THRILLED with the opportunity you have gifted our school!” Each team will wear t-shirts in one of the purple, gold and white school colors – sporting their newly designed sailing team logo.

“We suggest that parents and others who wish to watch, come out on Friday to the Pink Shell Beach Marina where small boats are available for rental through Holiday Water Sports,” says Colgate. “That’s when the kids will be at their peak, vying for team honors in the Sail-Race Challenge.”

Offshore Sailing School is headquartered at 16731 McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers and has eight sailing school locations. These include three in SW Florida – South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island, Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina on Ft. Myers Beach, and Hampton Inn and Suites in downtown St. Petersburg. Other locations are in the British Virgin Islands; St. Michaels, MD; New York and New Jersey.
