Mattapoisett Power Squadron offering paddle safety course

In recognition of National Safe Boating Week, May 19-25, the Mattapoisett Power Squadron encourages boaters to attend “Paddle Smart,” a paddle boat safety seminar, which will be presented at 1 p.m. June 9 at the Bass Pro Shop, One Bass Pro Drive, Patriot’s Place, Foxborough.

With a theme of “Ready, Set, Wear it!” the one and one-half hour seminar presents safety topics of interest and importance to kayakers and canoeists.

“We want to make all boaters safe boaters and offer this course with that hope in mind” Lt. Commander Dave True, of Mattapoisett Power Squadron, said.

Developed by the United States Power Squadrons, in conjunction with the American Canoe Association and the United States Coast Guard, the “Paddle Smart” seminar was developed as introduction to Paddling Skills and Safety. Topics presented will be: Selecting paddle craft, necessary equipment, PFDs for paddlers, cold water protection, terminology, using paddle boats, basic loading and entering techniques, getting to and from the water, and many more.

Paddle boats account for the largest percentage – more than 60 percent – of the new boat sales market. Although the total number of paddle boat accidents is small, more than 50 percent of the accidents result in a fatality. In 2010 there were 212 paddle boats accidents that resulted in 133 fatalities and 106 injuries, True said.

The cost for the seminar is $30 per person and includes a set of seminar notes and the a copy of Shelly Johnson’s book The Complete Sea Kayakers Handbook. A second person sharing materials is $10.

The Mattapoisett Power Squadron, chartered in 1952, serves the recreational boating community on Massachusetts’ South Coast. Courses available include America’s Boating Course an introductory course on safe boating approved by NASBLA and over 20 seminars on individual topics of interest to the boating public. The squadron offers a number of navigational and maintenance courses for its members. Volunteer instructors from the squadron membership teach all courses.
