Libya seizes 3 Italian fishing boats

TRIPOLI, June 9 — A Libyan patrol boat has forced three Italian fishing
boats to the port city of Benghazi, citing illegal entrance to the territorial
waters as the reason behind the move, local media reported on Saturday.

However, media reports from Rome said the fishing boats were halted and
intimidated by the patrolmen in international waters, some 40 nautical miles off
the Libyan coast.

Sailors from the patrol boat reportedly boarded the Italian vessels and
coerced the captains to head for Benghazi.

The Libyan News Agency quoted Mohamed al-Shaery, a confidentiality director
with the Libyan navy, as saying that the three Italian vessels were illegally
inside Libya’s territorial waters.
