From sails to sales: Change comes to landmark retail corner in DeWitt

DEWITT, NY – For more than 50 years, Syracuse Yacht Sales was a familiar sight at the corner of Lyndon Road and East Genesee Street in DeWitt, an area more commonly known as Lyndon Corners.

In fall 2016 – after more than 50 years in business – owner Fred Grunert began making plans to close the boat and sporting goods store.

His business got its start as DeWitt Sports 53 years ago, when it was located near what is now the DeWitt fire station. The store at one time was a full-scale ski shop, later expanding into bikes, kayaks and boats.

Today a new Verizon authorized retail cellular phone sales store has replaced the old building at the highly visible corner. The building’s shell was retained and a new store built around it.

Verizon has moved from its previous location in Fayetteville to the new store at 6901 E. Genesee St. The new store is now open.
