Florida’s boat-building industry bouncing back

The boat industry in Southwest Florida is beginning to see growth after being slowed during the economic downturn. Across the U.S., boat sales rose by 6 percent last year to $32.3 billion, marking the first rise since 2006, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association

.

A report by the Bradenton Herald said Florida took the lead in sales last year, taking $1.47 billion in recreational boat sales which was a 35 percent surge in 2010. Two local companies leading the way in this industry are Hann Powerboats in Bradenton and Chris-Craft of Sarasota.

Hann specializes in large military-style boats sold to government clients such as the U.S. Air Force, Navy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, municipal authorities and some private corporations. Chris-Craft produces boats for the luxury market and about half of its sales go to foreign buyers.
