Club warms up for Tasar competition

Busselton’s sailing community is gearing up for the World Tasar Championships with a warm-up event this weekend.

Club commodore Ken Waller said the competition on Sunday would be a practise run for the championships in January.

“We’ve got boats coming from all over the world for the real thing, so we need to have a dry run to get everyone up to speed,” he said.

“There’s going to be competitors, officials, judges, umpires — it’s a massive thing, so we need to make sure we’re ready.”

Mr Waller said volunteers needed to be trained in powerboat use to provide support and this alone was a major undertaking.

He said about 70 per cent of volunteers would be locals and the rest would be made up of Perth sailing enthusiasts.

The yacht club was looking forward to hosting the major event and everybody hoped it would be a success for the Busselton and Dunsborough community, Mr Waller said.

“The idea on Sunday is for all the locals to fall into line, but also for the competitors to get an idea of what to expect in January, ” he said.

“We’ve got a lot from Perth who are coming down to get used to the local conditions, so theoretically they will have an advantage over those who come from oversees.

“Then again, you never know what’s going to happen in sailing, so we’ll have to see how it works out.”
