Clarence River is where the action will be

BIG River Sailing Club’s premier event, the Bridge to Breakers Regatta, hits the Clarence River this weekend.

The two days will feature two different types of racing. At 1.30pm tomorrow, a passage race will unfold from the clubhouse at Harwood downstream towards Goodwood Island and for the faster boats, beyond to Iluka, then a return leg. Sunday features morning and afternoon racing on the stretch of water in front of the clubhouse and upstream towards the Harwood Bridge.

This is a long-standing annual event which is very well organised by the local sailing fraternity and many sailors who travel quite a long distance to attend. The very positive feedback the committee receives each year attests to its popularity.

This regatta generally attracts a mixed fleet of 50-plus and there is a division to suit any class of boat. Competitors are welcome to camp on the beautifully maintained club grounds free of charge.

The club facilities, including hot showers, are available. The club canteen is operating throughout the weekend and the club members serve a very hearty BBQ meal on Saturday evening for a very reasonable price. A cooked or continental breakfast is also available on Sunday morning. This year promises to see a good number of junior sailors with interest expressed by members of Richmond River Sailing and Rowing Club, Port of Yamba Yacht Club and Tweed Valley Sailing club.

Juniors from each of these clubs attended a sailing camp at Big River over the October long weekend and are keen to return and enjoy more fun and friendly competition. Big River welcomes any interested sailors and we hope to make this year’s event bigger and better than ever before.
