Boats ahoy at Mackay

MACKAY is gateway to great fishing and ocean adventures.

All you need is a boat, and if there’s one thing Reef Marine director Greg Camilleri knows it’s boats.

The award-winning company recently took out an international accolade at the Auckland Boat Show.

“We received the international dealer award for dealers outside New Zealand,” Mr Camilleri said.

“It recognises our contribution to the sale of Mackay boats.”

Mr Camilleri said many boats sold through Reef Marine were built in New Zealand.

“We do a lot of commercial, government and private boat sales,” he said.

Mackay is the perfect playground for boat owners.

“(It’s) such a good fishing destination, it appeals to a lot of people,” Mr Camilleri said.

This weekend you’ll find Mr Camilleri, along with 45 other marine exhibitors, at the Mackay Marine Festival.

“Reef Marine will have 22 boats on display,” he said.

The two-day boating bonanza is in its second year.

Marine Queensland marketing and communications officer Nicholle Smith said the inaugural event was such a success there was no question about whether it would be held again this year.

“We saw a 300% increase in new boat registrations,” Ms Smith said.

“It’s a real boost for the local dealers and a chance to showcase exactly what the local marine is all about.”

Sleek and speedy boys’ toys to family friendly fun – the Mackay Marine Festival has it all.

Exhibitors are travelling from across the country for the festival, which coincides with the Offshore Superboats Championship.

“Saturday is the qualifying races and Sunday is the race finals,” Ms Smith said.

North Queensland Bulk Ports is putting on plenty of family friendly fun at Mulherin Park with rides for the children, music and entertainment, including fishing workshops.

“It’s just a huge boost for the region and the local marine industry,” Ms Smith said.
