SAN DIEGO —- Two years after being declared all but dead in
the water, the San Diego Sunroad Boat Show is sailing into port
again next weekend stronger than ever.
Last year, the National Marine Manufacturers association
canceled its 20th annual San Diego show, saying that the recession
had swamped boat sales. But the operators of Sunroad Resort Marina
in San Diego decided to try producing their own show under the
Sunroad banner. The result —- the first San Diego Sunroad Boat
Show in January 2011 —- was a huge success, with virtually all of
the exhibitor slots in the marina sold out in advance and record
attendance.
This year’s show —- from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday,
and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 28 —- will be even larger
than last year’s event, according to show director Jim Behun, who’s
also general manager of Sunroad.
The show will feature more than 100 new and used sailboats and
motor yachts berthed at slips in the marina. There will also be
dozens of marine vendor selling nautical products and food and
drink booths. There will be boat rides for children and adults,
boating seminars and more.
Tickets are $10 for adults. Children 12 and under are free with
paid adult. Active military, law enforcement and rescue personnel
are free (with ID) on Thursday and Friday. Because of limited
parking onsite, show attendees must park in the lot next to the
Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel at North Harbor Drive and Harbor
Island Drive ($10 a day) and ride a free shuttle to the marina.
Shuttle service runs from one hour before the show starts until one
hour after it closes each day.
Sunroad Marina is at 955 Harbor Island Drive. Visit
