Area boat, RV dealers ready for Green Country show

It’s outdoor season in Oklahoma, but it’s clearance season for many of the area’s RV and boat dealers.

Area boat and recreational vehicle dealers will be pushing this year’s models at this week’s Green Country RV and Boat Show at the QuikTrip Center at Expo Square.

The event starts Friday and usually marks the end of the major selling season for area outdoor vehicle sellers. The show runs through Sunday.

“It’s usually a pretty good deal for the consumer at this point,” said Phil Keeter, organizer of the show. “Dealers are trying to sell as much of their merchandise as they can. They don’t really want a lot of boats and RVs sitting around all winter.”

The pleasure-vehicle industry is making a comeback after the economic downturn, which severely sucked the life out of sales on RVs and boats.

The season kick-off event in January brought in more than 40,000 visitors, and Keeter said many dealers were making multiple sales a day.

But attendance is still well below pre-recession numbers, Keeter said, as the industry struggles to rebound and to convince consumers to make big-money purchases.

The show will feature nine area RV dealers and a handful of boat dealers as well, covering the 204,000-square-foot upper level of the QuikTrip Center.

Keeter said RV dealers in this area of the country have seen sudden demand for fifth-wheel trailers as sales of “Class A” motor homes have waned.

“The advent of a lot of these fifth wheels with the toy haulers has really created interest,” Keeter said, speaking of the designated storage area in the back of trailers for motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. “And I think high gas prices still has something to do with it.”

The fifth-wheel’s popularity is aided by the popularity of pickup trucks, especially diesel-fueled vehicles, in the region.

For boat dealers this year, family-friendly pontoon boats have registered big sales.
