5 things to do under $5: Train Day, boat show, Darryl Strawberry at Night of Prayer

1Train Day: Tampa’s historic Union Station will have a series of free family-friendly events to mark the anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Amtrak dropped the event this year due to budget cuts, but the Friends of Tampa Union Station volunteers will keep the celebration rolling. There will be train displays from the Florida Railroad Museum and railroad clubs, historic exhibits, live music and food trucks 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 601 N Nebraska Ave., Tampa.

2Florida Orchestra Family Concerts: The orchestra’s principal harpist, Anna Kate Mackle, joins principal percussionist John Shaw to demonstrate their instruments at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Arrive early for an instrument petting zoo and a storytime for preschoolers through second grade. The 11:30 a.m. performance is sensory friendly. 3Tampa Bay Night of Prayer: With speaker Darryl Strawberry at the dais, the annual prayer breakfast hosted by the Christian Business Men’s Connection has been moved to George M. Steinbrenner Field this year to accommodate the crowd. 4Tampa Bay Boat Show: If you are ready to ride the waves, this three-day sales event features the area’s top boat dealers as well as boating and fishing supplies and accessories. Some of the area’s top fish guides and local experts share tips, secrets and fun stories on how to “catch the big one.” 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. 5Gridiron Cooking Challenge: Watch as area elementary and middle school students prepare their best healthy, dairy-based recipes at One Buc Place for a panel of judges set up by the Florida Dairy Farmers association. Winners get a $2,500 prize pack for their school and additional prizes. NMMA reports increase in powerboat sales

Traditional powerboat retail unit sales were up 5.9 percent for the 12 months through February 2017 and wholesale shipments rose 3.6 percent.

That’s according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, which released its Recreational Boating Industry 2017 Q1 Data Dashboard today.

The dashboard features insights that include boat market statistics, economic indicators such as home price and boat sales trends, wholesale forecasting, small business sentiment and the economic health of major export partners.

Sales of boats powered by outboards, inboards and jet propulsion were all up, with only sterndrive-powered boats continuing to edge down.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index decreased slightly in April, to 120.3, down from 124.9 in March, but remained strong.

Optimism among small businesses also fell slightly in March. The NFIB Index of Small Business Optimism was at 104.7, down from 105.3 in February; however, March marked the fourth consecutive month with a reading near 105.
