Hinckley debuts certified pre-owned sales program

Posted on March 31st, 2017

Buyers of previously owned Hinckleys can now get what buyers of previously owned luxury cars have been enjoying for years: a certified pre-owned program that offers extended warranties and the assurance of knowing their purchase has been factory-maintained.

The first certified pre-owned Hinckleys were set to appear on the brokerage market this month.

“Many Hinckleys that reach the used-boat market have not only been built by Hinckley, but they have been maintained throughout their life by our own staff. We know these boats, we know that they’ve been properly serviced, we represent them in the marketplace, so our confidence in them is very high,” Hinckley CEO Peter O’Connell said in a statement. “Extending specific warranties to a new owner is easy for us, and it feels like a good way to welcome a new owner into our brand family.”

O’Connell made the announcement at the Hinckley Owners Rendezvous at Ocean Reef in Key Largo, Fla.

For a Hinckley to qualify for CPO status, it must have been serviced in the company’s seven service operations or in a yard authorized to service Hinckley products. The boat must then undergo inspection and be listed for sale with a Hinckley-owned sales office.

There is no program cost to the seller or buyer of the certified pre-owned boat.

Hinckley said the warranties the program provides vary according to the age of the boat. Platinum coverage — for boats less than five years old — provides a lifetime hull and deck warranty and a powertrain warranty for the balance of the original manufacturer’s, plus two additional years.

Gold coverage, for boats five to 10 years old, provides a hull and deck warranty for 12 years from the original date of build, plus two years of powertrain coverage. Silver coverage provides Hinckleys that are more than 10 years old with a one-year powertrain warranty.

“Hinckleys already retain their value well when resold and have among the lowest depreciation rates in the industry,” O’Connell said. “We think that the certified pre-owned program will further enhance value retention. Owners whose boats are about to come on the market as part of the program are excited about the prospects.”

Bill requiring boat titles likely pushed off to 2018 legislative session

A Georgia bill requiring boat titles is likely dead for this year’s General Assembly session, which ends Thursday, but it could return next year.

“We still need some additional work on the bill,” said Sen. Butch Miller, R-Gainesville, on Wednesday. “We should hold the bill in committee, work with all interested parties and bring it back next year.”

The bill, sponsored by Miller in the Senate and Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Savannah, in the House, says “no person shall operate or give permission for the operation” of any vessel unless it is properly titled.

Boat titles would help deter theft and “create equity and fairness for the selling of vessels by dealers, brokers, agents, private parties and manufacturers,” the bill says.

The bill has been in the works for several years, pushed by Gainesville-based Lake Lanier Association.

A particular concern for the group is abandoned vessels and how to identify owners.

“Since the registration process doesn’t have the same legal authority as a title, we are hindering the effectiveness of our law enforcement agencies to hold the responsible boat owner accountable,” the association says in an information sheet.

LLA also has said that some lenders “are less willing to finance boat sales in a non-title state. That leaves fewer lenders willing to finance, which translates into less competition in this market and higher interest rates charged on boat loans to consumers.”

The bill has had trouble advancing in the legislature in past years.

The association says that while most of its members support the bill, most of those polled in other areas of the state are opposed.

“Those who took the extra step to (say why they opposed) cited ‘big government’ and new taxation as the primary (reasons),” the group said.

Joanna Cloud, LLA’s executive director, said the bill crossing from the House, where it passed on March 1, to the Senate “is progress from previous attempts.”

“The good news is that since we are in year one of a two-year cycle, (the bill) will stay alive for 2018,” she said.

LOMDA Boat Show boasts record attendance

The Overland Park Boat Show, which was held at the end of January recorded the highest attendance since 2007. This is also the first time since 2009 that the amount of paid admission tickets sold peaked the 5,000 mark.

The Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association announced that the two large Winter Boat Shows, held in Overland Park, Kansas and St. Charles, Missouri both posted record attendance this year. Both shows this year were sold out for vendor space, and featured product exhibited by various Lake area marinas, and other lake related companies.

Mike Kenagy, Executive Director of the Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association said, “We are extremely pleased with the attendance of both shows this year and many of our association members posted record sales. These shows are always a good indication as to the economic climate for the lake… and right now those indications are very positive for a good year at the lake”.

The Overland Park Boat Show, which was held at the end of January recorded the highest attendance since 2007. This is also the first time since 2009 that the amount of paid admission tickets sold peaked the 5,000 mark.

The St Charles Boat show which was held the first week of March followed suit with overall attendance numbers topping the +20% mark over last year’s highly successful show. This is the 2nd largest total attendance at this show since LOMDA began the show in St Charles. The show also posted a record number of paid attendance tickets.

Roger Hulett of MBC, the marketing agency representing LOMDA said, “We are thrilled with the higher attendance numbers of course, but we really want to know that we are getting our message to the “boaters” that are truly interested in our exhibitor’s products. With the amount of people that said they were individually breaking sales records…it looks like we did. These people that boat at the Lake of the Ozarks are really gearing up for 2017”.

Kenagy went on to say, “We are very encouraged by this economic news, and expect this trend to continue at our In-Water Boat Show coming up at Dog Days here at the Lake of the Ozarks April 21st through 23rd”. This show is unique for LOMDA in that potential buyers are looking at boats that are in the water and can be test driven any day of the show.

The Lake of the Ozarks Marine Dealers Association is made up of over 40 lake area marine dealers, representing all the top lines of boats, marine accessories, docks, personal watercraft and everything else to promote fun on our local waters.

Video: Two boats destroyed by fire at Burton Waters Marina

The owner of a boat, which was gutted after a fire at Burton Waters Marina, says he is devastated that six months of work refitting the boat has now gone up in smoke.

Firefighters from Lincoln, Saxilby, Sleaford and Scunthorpe tackled the fire. No one was injured in the incident, which happened on 25 March 2017 at 12.30pm.

Bob Nicholson was renovating the 23-foot Stella Maris for his wife, Sue, who owns the boat worth £9,000.

Speaking to the Lincolnshire Echo, he said: “I’d only just finishing doing it up for sale and it’s such as shame because it’s a complete write-off and someone has been deprived of the chance of earning a nice boat”.

“My wife is heartbroken and I’m totally devastated. I did it up for something to keep my mind occupied,” he explained.

“But it’s just one of those things. It’s no-one’s fault, it just happened,” added Nicholson

It is believed the fire started accidentally after a visiting boat – a Freedom 22 – had just refuelled at the marina’s diesel pump. It is thought a carburettor of the motor yacht backfired and ignited fuel vapour.

The flames spread from the boat to the Stella Maris. The two fuel pumps, jetty and two trees were also on fire, and thick black smoke could be seen above the marina.

The fuel pumps are expected to be back in operation within the next two weeks.

The managing director of Burton Waters Boat Sales, Adam Cox, explained what happened.

“What happened was that a visiting boat came and was fuelled up and then the man came to pay. It was nearly 20 minutes later that he started the boat up and at that point he saw there was a fire on board so he quickly gets off,” he said.

“Our fire safety team tried to deal with the fire at first but it was just too fierce but the firefighters were here really quickly. Thankfully, no-one was hurt,” added Cox.

Firefighters used special pumps to prevent the boats from sinking.
