Najad back in business

Sweden’s Lidköpings Båtsnickeri, builders of SwedeStar sailing yachts, has acquired Najadvarvet. The new owners have purchased all rights to Najad boats, reports IBI magazine.

“I’m very happy to announce positive news on the boating market,” says Håkan Bengtsson, manager at SwedeStar/Lidköpings Båtsnickeri, based at lake Vänern. “Through the acquisiton of Najad we complete our range of boats under the SwedeStar range.”

Najad was founded in 1971 and has since built more than 2,000 sailing boats. The acquisition means that Najad’s production will move to Henån on the island of Orust and the yard that was originally built for the Najad production.

“Through this acquisition we have really good possibilities to build a strong and stable company with the SwedeStar and Najad boat ranges,” says Bengtsson. “Together with local subcontractors, we will take advantage of the good boatbuilding tradition in Sweden to produce an exclusive series of sailing boats.”

Our Boat House is an on-line coastal boutique offering unique Home Furnishings, Slipcovered Furniture, Nautical Lighting, Ship Authentics and Sea-Inspired Accessories. Its vast collection of coastal style furnishings gives easy access to products that would be otherwise unattainable. Our Boat House is an earth-friendly company on a mission to help the environment and community by supporting “green” living–recycling, reusing, re-purposing, reclaiming, and giving new life to a wide-range of things that have been discarded by others. Our Boat House continues to help the environment through the development of its green products—a line of totes re-purposed from old sales, furniture made of reclaimed wood and authentic lights, lanterns and accessories salvaged from old ships.

The Oceanside Collection of Slipcovered Furniture is manufactured with woods that are sourced from domestic suppliers certified in responsible forest management; forests are replanted and are sustainable. Glues used are water-based and biodegradable. Metal springs are made from recycled metal. Seat cushions are wrapped in regenerated fibers, much of which were once plastic bottles. A more eco-friendly project starts with what goes into the fabric — fiber made from recycled materials and earth-friendly ingredients. Our Boat House fabrics are derived from natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and mohair. Our Boat House chooses manufacturers with the integrity to develop new practices better for the earth.

Along with their concern for the environment’s well being, Our Boat House strives to stimulate the nation’s economy by committing to offer only “Made in the USA” Slipcovered Furniture. According to TAP, a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalize America, “If each citizen spent an additional dollar per day on American-made goods, this alone would create an additional million jobs in America.” By taking individual action we can enact social change that will send a message that we want quality goods made by our own-two hands rather than those made in China. The pledge to buy goods made in America will reignite the torch of Liberty for America.

Our Boat House is a true find of a website developed specifically for coastal homeowners looking for unique ideas and items to decorate starter homes to luxury ocean abodes. Our Boat House site is a vessel that shares special nautical finds that help homeowners and designers create a beach home style that is comfortable for the entire family – a place to enjoy life and to nourish the soul.

The current trend of washed reclaimed wood adds a casual beach side element that is best mixed with the classics of the rich woods, leathers, and cottons. The mix of these elements creates a warm, welcoming, and timeless home that is not trendy. Whatever the readers’ personal taste – from contemporary to transitional – the content will help capture the drama and mood of the sea and create their own unique sea-inspired escape.

First Ever Cretan Union Cup Celebrates Reunion with Greece Centenary

The Cretan Union Cup sailing regatta is the first event of its kind on the Island. Launched to celebrate 100 years since the reunion with Crete, the organizers hope that the regatta will become a cherished local tradition.

Heraklion, Crete – The first race of the Cretan Union Cup kicks off on Monday from Chania, at 13:00 local time, followed by Rethymno at 10:00 on Wednesday, October 16, then Heraklion at 10:00 on Friday, October 18; and finally Aghios Nikolaos at 10:00 on Sunday, October 20. There will be 9 races in total, opened to athletes from all over the world, with boats with overall length equal or greater than 7 meters in one of the following classes: ORC International; IRC; Classic Vintage Yachts; ORC Club; Charter Boat (ORC Club Non spinnaker boats). The registration completed on Sunday, October 13, 2013.

The first event of this kind ever organized on the North coast of Crete, the Cretan Union Cup celebrates 100 years since the raising of the Greek flag at the fort of Firka, which marks the union of the Island with Greece. The regatta also aims to be a homage to ancient Minoan sailing traditions, which shaped local culture, art, and lifestyle. Participants – both athletes and the public – will enjoy a superb display of sailing skills, but will also learn about the Minoans, and the birthplace of Zeus, all while enjoying authentic Cretan hospitality, cuisine and culture.

The Cretan Union Cup is a joint initiative by the Region of Crete, the Hellenic Sailing Federation, and local nautical groups—the Nautical Club Gaziou Crete, the Nautical Club of Chania, the Sailing Club of Chania, the Sailing Club of Rethymno, the Sailing Club of Heraklion, the Sailing Club of Ag. Nikolaos, and the Nautical Club of Sitia.

The event is sponsored by numerous local businesses, each contribution in different ways to the event. For example, aside giving the winners free stays in the best suites, the Lato Boutique Hotel in Heraklion also offers an exclusive 10% discount to our readers who want to stay at the hotel during the regatta. To take advantage of this offer, use the following code “travel” when you make your reservation. Lato Boutique Hotel has direct access to the marina in Heraklion – you can see the sails leaving the harbor and returning at the end of the race, right from your window, or from the terrace at Lato’s Herbs Garden restaurant and rooftop bar.

Lato Boutique is also awarding the winner of the regatta a stay in the hotel”s Executive Suite overlooking the Venetian fortress of Rocca al Mare and the harbor. For more information on the Cretan Union Cup Regatta, please visit the links prescribed, or contact the organizers directly at:
