Fishing vessel sinks in fire near Big Carlos Pass – News

Sea Tow workers Friday morning will continue trying to raise a 43-foot sport fishing boat that caught fire and sank near Bonita Springs on Thursday afternoon.

There were seven people aboard the boat when it caught fire on the bayside of Big Carlos Pass and Estero Bay. All were able to escape the boat without injuries.

After sinking, the boat came to a rest on a shoal, complicating salvage efforts, Coast Guard officials said. Attempts to raise the boat using airbags were unsuccessful.

As night set in, Sea Tow workers decided to suspend their salvage efforts until the morning for safety reasons, officials said.

There were 500 gallons of fuel on the boat when it sank, and spill containment barriers were brought to the scene as a precaution, but there were no reports of spills or sheen, according to Jon-Paul Rios with the Coast Guard.

Firefighters from Sanibel, Bonita, Ester and Iona-McGregor and the Coast Guard responded to the fire and fought it with a mixture of water and foam.

Connor Wells, 16, was fishing off the bridge over the Big Carlos Pass when the boat caught fire around noon.

He said the boat came under the bridge from the Gulf and stopped a few hundred feet past the bridge, where another boat approached and helped the people on board evacuate. The boat then began smoking and caught fire.

Officials were on the scene rerouting boats away from the bridge and boat following the fire. The boat sank below the surface just before 2 p.m.

Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District spokeswoman Debbi Redfield said the boat will be considered a total loss.

Ocean race yachts shipped to avoid pirate attacks

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — To avoid pirates, five multimillion-dollar yachts involved in the Volvo Ocean Race were transported on an armed ship Wednesday through the Indian Ocean.

The decision to load and ship the boats — because the area was deemed too dangerous to sail — is unprecedented, organizers said.

The 15-ton yachts with 31-meter masts still in place were hoisted and placed in custom-built cradles on board the ship at an undisclosed “safe haven” port in the Indian Ocean.

“Boats are built to go in the water, not the air, so this operation scared me,” said Iker Martinez, the Spanish skipper of leading boat Telefonica. “A lot can go wrong very quickly when you’re hauling these super-fragile boats around.”

The latest measure is part of a multifaceted plan that includes the introduction of a large exclusion zone to keep the boats from sailing through dangerous waters near Somalia’s coast.

The teams are expected to arrive at the location within six days and complete the leg with a short sprint into Abu Dhabi in the first week of January.

Fifth-place finish helps Vonn pad lead

Anna Fenninger of Austria skied a nearly flawless second run in Lienz, Austria, to capture a giant slalom for her first World Cup victory, while American Lindsey Vonn extended her lead in the overall standings.

Fenninger, 22, was 0.23 of a second off the lead in sixth place after the opening leg. She used a superb second run to finish in a combined time of 2 minutes, 16.08 seconds.

Federica Brignone of Italy was 0.20 of a second behind, and Tessa Worley of France was third. Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany, who led after the first run, finished fourth. Vonn was fifth.

“I can’t believe it myself,” Fenninger said. “It’s my first win ever. I always used to be good at speed events and now I win in GS.”

Vonn, who won the season-opening giant slalom in October, boosted her overall World Cup lead. She has 599 points, 231 more than Fenninger, who moved into second place.

Match disrupted by fan will be replayed

The cup match between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar that was halted after a fan ran onto the field and attacked AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado will be replayed in full Jan. 19 behind closed doors, the Dutch soccer association announced.

The Dec. 21 match at the Amsterdam Arena was abandoned in the 36th minute with AZ trailing 1-0 after Alvarado was sent off for kicking the 19-year-old fan who launched a karate-style kick at him from behind.

The Dutch FA also fined Ajax $13,000 for failing to prevent the fan, who was supposed to be serving a three-year ban from attending matches at the arena, from invading the field.

Feds Bust Alleged Internet Auto/Boat Sales Scam By Russians

russians-are-coming.jpgThe U.S. Department of Justice in Los Angeles announced this afternoon that a federal grand jury has indicted six foreign nationals–including one in Costa Mesa–for operating an Internet-based sales scam that allegedly defrauded more than $4.2 million from unsuspecting shoppers since 2007.

According to a DOJ press release, the money laundering conspiracy used eBay Motors, Auto Trader, Yahoo Auto, Edmunds.com, Craigslist and PayPal accounts to collect money from individuals across the nation and then funneled the funds to European accounts without ever delivering a single ordered vehicle, boat, motor home or motorcycle.

“This case demonstrates our ability to track down even the most
sophisticated fraud artist who attempted to hide behind false identities
and the perceived anonymity of the Internet,” United States Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in a prepared statement.

The Costa Mesa Police Department participated in the investigation (along with the U.S. Secret Service, IRS and the Department of Homeland Security) and arrested Sergej Bugaev,
38, a Russian national and Berlin resident. Two of the suspects were
captured in Nevada and three others apparently are overseas and haven’t
    yet been apprehended.

Federal agents said the conspirators used sophisticated, legitimate-seeming documents to trick customers.

Editor’s Note: The original version of this story contained a couple of errors, including the spelling of Molly Perdue’s last name. The name of the vessel that helped pull the grounded vessel off the beach was the Patience-Too. This story has been corrected.

PROVINCETOWN — Melanie Braverman lives by the sea. It literally laps at the foot of the seawall beneath her bedroom window. When she opens the blinds each morning, she never knows what surprise Provincetown Harbor, and Cape Cod Bay beyond, has in store.

“It was really loud last night,” Braverman said about the wind that blew hard from late Tuesday evening into the early morning hours Wednesday. She expected there might be something cast up on the strip of beach 10 feet below her home but never anticipated the towering bulk of a large wooden fishing boat that had drifted to within 20 feet of her bedroom.

“I opened the curtain, and there it was,” Braverman exclaimed. “It filled the window.”

“You have to come in and see this,” she yelled to her partner, Molly Perdue. Perdue replied that she needed coffee first.

“The coffee can wait,” Braverman said.

The 75-foot-long former commercial fishing vessel Amanda Girl, now known as My Yot, had broken free of its mooring chains in high winds and drifted a mile across the harbor to land on Braverman’s doorstep sometime between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., assistant harbormaster Luis Ribas said.

The vessel has no working engine, owner Rick Macara said, and is moored near his aquaculture grant for use as a work space when he is out tending to his shellfish. In the summer, he sometimes lives aboard, although he was back on shore for the winter.

With no motor and no money to hire a professional salvage crew, Macara had to rely on Provincetown fishermen to help him free the heavy wooden vessel before another tide and wave action pushed it higher onto the beach and deeper into the sand. At MacMillan Pier, he found two ship captains willing to steam their boats across the harbor and try and tow it off the sandbar and back to its mooring.

Spectators gathered on the patios and seawalls fronting the harbor as the crew of the Patience Two tossed a thick tow line over to Macara, who fastened it to his vessel and then stood back.

Award and sales for Brundall boat builder

A Brundall boat firm has been nominated for an industry award for its new luxury motor cruiser.

Broom Boats has been nominated for the IPC Marine Media Motor Boat of the Year Award.

The nomination is for its new Broom 370, a luxury 38ft motor cruiser, which was launched at Southampton International Boat Show earlier this year.

Seven Broom 370s have already been sold this year with deliveries in France, Holland and the UK. Last year the construction arm of the firm was put through voluntary liquidation, but the firm was taken over by investors Mark Garner and Akis Chrisovelides and started building boats again.

Anglers now need a visa to fish in Mexico – San Diego Union

As expected, all anglers venturing into Mexico on fishing trips – by sea or by land — now are required to obtain a visa in order to fish there due to an immigration law enacted recently in May by the Mexican government.

Mexican authorities are expected to begin enforcing the visa requirements on Jan. 1 with random checks of commercial passenger fishing boats and private boats in Mexican waters.

The cost of the visas will range from $33.06 for three days of fishing or less to $250 for a yearly visa. The cost will vary depending on the value of the peso. All captains and crew members of sport boats will need the visa as well as all anglers on the boats. Fishermen who venture to Mexico on private boats also will need the visas and a Mexican fishing permit (approximately $11) or a yearly Mexican fishing license (approximately $45).

California Department of Fish and Game statistics show there are more than 70,000 licenses fishermen in San Diego County, but this new law requiring a visa will impact hundreds of thousands of anglers who travel from all over the United States and the world and fish Mexican waters out of San Diego and other ports.

The Sportfishing Association of California on Wednesday released some of the parameters surrounding the new documentation that all anglers must have to fish in Mexico. The local landings are working out an arrangement for a private company, MEX Tour Assistance, to administer the visas at the docks. SAC member vessels will obtain a visa through a program sanctioned by the Mexican Immigration Department (INAMI). All crew members must have a visa in order to work on fishing boats in Mexico. MEX Tour Assistance will work out of the local landings to make it easier for local anglers to obtain a visa. At some point, private boater anglers also may be able to get visas at the landings in order to fish in Mexico.

“This program will permit the application process to be administered through a company approved by INAMI,” the SAC release said. “This company is currently working with the sportfishing landings in San Diego to establish the required infrastructure. Once the process is ‘live’ the feasibility of opening it up to the general boating public will be evaluated by the San Diego Landings.”

The fee schedule charged by MEX Tourist Assistance will be as follows:

    FMM 3 days or less – $33.06.

    FMM 4-9 days — $38.06.

    FMM 10 days or more — $43.06.

    FM3 for one year — $250.

MEX Tourist Assistance is a Mexican-based company owned by Ana Guillermina Amezaga, according to her U.S.-based partner in the company, Troy Williams. MEX Tourist Assistance guarantees a three-hour turnaround on visa applications, said Williams, who works in the aerospace industry and is an avid angler.

Williams said Thursday morning that he was on his way to the SAC office in Point Loma to work out details of the process. MEX Tourist Assistance will also provide training at the landings so personnel there will be able to collect fees so that MEX Tour Assistance employees can go to Tijuana to obtain the visas.

Knox man surrenders on sales tax evasion charges in Anderson

The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted an investigation that led to the indictment and surrender of Jerry Lee Hatmaker, 64, of Knoxville, for alleged sales tax invasion.

According to a news release emailed to The Oak Ridger by the Department of Revenue, Hatmaker surrendered to authorities at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department. Bond was set at $25,000.

An Anderson County grand jury returned a four-count indictment against Hatmaker, including one count for evasion of sales tax, a Class E felony; one count of filing a false report; one count of perjury; and one count of forgery.

The indictment alleges Hatmaker obstructed the state in the collection of sales tax by falsifying records relating to his purchase of a boat, resulting in underreported sales tax totaling $2,050.50.

“The Department of Revenue promotes voluntary taxpayer compliance by educating taxpayers, aggressively pursuing criminal sanctions and demanding accountability when taxpayers engage in fraudulent activity,“ said Revenue Commissioner Richard H. Roberts in the news release. “This indictment underscores the department’s ongoing efforts to enforce Tennessee’s tax laws.“

Prosecution of this criminal case was pursued by the department in cooperation with District Attorney General Dave Clark’s office.

Citizens who suspect violations of Tennessee’s revenue laws should call the toll-free tax fraud hot line at (800) FRAUDTX (372-8389).
