20 killer whales greet kids sailing off Dana Point

A group of young schoolchildren got an unexpected close encounter with a pod of about 20 killer whales off Dana Point while on a charter cruise Thursday morning with Dana Wharf Sportfishing Whale Watching.

Dana Wharf General Manager Donna Kalez said the group from La Canada Elementary School was on a 10 a.m. whale-watching trip aboard the boat Dana Pride when the group of adult whales and calves appeared nearby.

“It was really awesome that they got to see these rare and amazing creatures,” Kalez said.

Killer whales, or orcas, are a relatively rare sight off the coast of Orange County, but this was the second time this month a group of them appeared off Dana Point. On Jan. 3, 10 were seen playing and hunting sea lions near whale-watching boats.
